There is no Uber in Madeira (in 2024). The ride-hailing app Bolt does offer some service in Madeira, but it’s so limited that it’s usually not the best method for getting around the island or its capital, Funchal.

Local regulations only permit ride-sharing services in very limited ways. Concessions have been made to one or two companies, not individual drivers, and the number of cars on Bolt is extremely low.

You have to be a bit lucky with Bolt. Sometimes there are several drivers nearby, other times there may be just one, or none at all. When it works it can be a good way to get around, but sometimes you might have to wait a long time for your pick-up.

The restrictions on ride-hailing were clearly implemented to protect the taxi companies. It seems taxis outnumber ride-hailing cars by something like 50 to 1. Taking taxis is often the quickest way.

Taxi ranks can be found in Funchal on the main seafront boulevard, opposite the Cathedral, beside the Municipal Park, among many other places.

You can also hail taxis using the Bolt app, or the local Taxi Link app.

Taxis are also on the Bolt app

Getting to Funchal from the airport

The airport is about a 20-minute drive from the city and a taxi ride should cost around €30. You can also take the Aerobus which costs €6.50 and departs from right outside the terminal exit. However, Check the timetable because sometimes the wait for it can be quite long. We have more details on how to get to/from the airport.

Sightseeing around the island

Instead of using taxis, you may find it more affordable to book a day tour for some sightseeing around the island. This will also get you a fun tour guide experience instead of a potentially grumpy taxi driver.

A day tour of the highlights in the west of Madeira by minibus starts at about €40 and can be booked on GetYourGuide. However, we recommend this 4×4 jeep tour which costs €70 per person for the day, which takes many exciting backroads and will give you a unique experience.

But the best way to explore Madeira is ultimately by car! Find out what to expect of the roads in Madeira and our tips for renting a car. While the mountainous terrain can sometimes be challenging, we’ve found having your own vehicle is the best way to get around.
